Blending Fitness, Nature, and Learning: Archbishop Missionary School’s Immersive SportMalta School Sports Day

SportMalta News October 21, 2024 0

On SportMalta School Sports Day, a Year 2 class and two Year 4 classes at the Archbishop Missionary School participated in a unique physical activity session during their Immersive Education lesson, blending fitness with nature. The Year 2 students began with a brisk 5-minute walk to the school’s pomegranate trees, where they learned about the tree’s life cycle. They then sprinted to the olive trees, where a web-like obstacle course, made from string tied between the trees, awaited them. This web symbolized the tiny spider often found in the crown of a pomegranate fruit.

The students were divided into teams of three for a relay race, where they had to dig soil, carry it across the web while twisting and bending, and fill a cup on the other side. The challenge was to keep the soil steady or risk spilling it, adding an element of focus and coordination to the race.

For the Year 4 students, the same activities were followed by a fine motor skills challenge. Using wooden plywood with holes, nuts, and bolts, they worked together to replicate the shape of a pomegranate crown, a six-pointed star, guided by a laminated photo.

The activities were not only physically engaging but also educational, connecting nature, teamwork, and motor skills.
