Valletta Primary school joined the SportMalta Schools Sports Day, a vibrant event that brought together schools from various regions. On the 13th of October, St. Monica School, Birkirkara participated in the SportMalta Schools Sports Day 2023. It was a vibrant and energetic day that showcased the importance of physical activity and sportsmanship among students.

Amidst the enthusiastic atmosphere, students enthusiastically engaged in a variety of sports activities, transforming the school grounds into a hub of excitement. The air resonated with shouts and laughter, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and healthy competition. The Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima congratulated Omar Farrugia on his appointment as Chairperson of SportMalta. The Minister mentioned the importance of the entity, which continues to grow the culture of sporting excellence and increase participation at every level. Sport plays a crucial role in the physical and mental well-being of citizens and is a key factor in bringing communities together.

SportMalta welcomed this appointment which will continue to strengthen the work within it, while it recognized Prof. Andrew Decelis for the work he carried out during his term. SportMalta also recognizes the invaluable input given by Vice Chair, Matthew Pisani, ensuring a smooth transition.

From November 6th to 10th, 2023, the “Let’s Move Malta” initiative was a big success. It brought the community together for a happy celebration of sports and friendship.

The week started on Monday at the Kirkop Complex with a Special Olympics event from 5 pm to 7 pm. There were activities like Table Tennis, Bocce, Various Sports, and Basketball. The atmosphere was lively, and it made people feel connected through shared enjoyment.

On Tuesday, there were activities for senior citizens at Saint Vincent De Paule, bringing fun exercises to promote active lifestyles for Malta’s seniors.

Wednesday was exciting with a collaboration between the Civil Service, Sportmalta, and the Malta Employees Sport Association at the Marsa Sports Complex. From 12:30 pm to 3:45 pm, employees played Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, and Cross Country, encouraging healthy competition and team spirit.

Thursday started with Caritas at San Blas hosting a morning filled with sports activities like Tic Tac Toe, Turn the Tarp, Logo Puzzle Relay, Build the Pyramid on swimming boards, Find the Pair Relay, 7-a-side football, handball, and Tug of War. The day ended at 11 am, leaving participants feeling thrilled.

Closing the week on a high note, Friday’s School Sports Day at Cottonera Sports Complex brought schools together for a morning of spirited sports activities in the main hall.

The entire week showed how powerful sports can be in bringing people together, creating unity, and making lasting memories. “Let’s Move Malta” was more than just an event; it was a celebration that touched every participant, leaving behind a legacy of shared joy and community spirit.

In addition to organizing this successful Sports Day, St. Thomas More College Middle & Secondary School in Zejtun also proudly participated in the annual SportMalta Schools Sports Day 2023. The main aim was to show how physical activity can boost academic performance and encourage inclusiveness through sports. This event aligned perfectly with the #Beactve campaign, which emphasizes the link between being active and improved health and academic achievements.

The Sports Day featured a wide range of activities designed to test agility, balance, coordination, speed, and strength. These activities included flat fun races, Tug of War, and possession games, all of which helped students develop their physical abilities and foster teamwork.

The event was a great success, with students actively engaging in various activities, showcasing their physical talents, and forming new friendships. It underlined the significance of physical fitness, not just for overall well-being but also for academic success.

Malta won the bronze medal in the first edition of the European Championships after defeating the Faroe Islands 3-1.

SportMalta hosted the championships for the teams at the Cottonera Sports Complex, with a total of eight participating countries.

The Maltese team won two matches in their group and lost one, advancing to the semifinals where they were defeated by Cyprus.

Today, they achieved victory against the Faroe Islands, the same team that had beaten Malta in the group stage, securing the third place in the Championships.

Team Malta was composed of Francesca Clark, Samuel Cassar, Matthew Abela, Lauren Azzopardi, Nigel Degaetano, Elenia Haber, and Matthew Galea, led by Head Coach Matthew Haynes.

A week of sporting activities has been launched – ‘Let’s Move Malta.’ This is a week-long initiative of sporting activities in which many people from all walks of life will be involved.

Dr. Lydia Abela, who also serves as the President of Special Olympics Malta, pointed out that this week has a purpose to unite. “The beauty of sport is that it brings many people together,” claimed Dr. Abela. She said that this initiative is in favour of a stronger society and it should encourage more people to get involved in physical activities.

This initiative is being organized in collaboration with Sport Malta under Ministry of Sport. The initiative will kick-off today afternoon with sports activities by the athletes of Special Olympics Malta.

Minister Clifton Grima spoke about the significant investments made in recent years in sports infrastructure and said that these facilities are not only enjoyed by athletes and sportsmen but are also available to the general public. “We are providing top-level facilities throughout our country, and we are also ensuring that schools are well-equipped. We will continue to emphasize the importance of sport and physical activity from a young age.

Mark Cutajar, Chief Executive of Sport Malta, talked about how one should take advantage of opportunities from initiatives like this, so that, through different areas of life, including the workplace, one engages in physical activity in the place where they spend most of their time. He said that, “Through this initiative, we want to show that everyone can engage in physical activity, regardless of age, and most importantly, anywhere. The activities are spread across the Sports Complex of Kirkop, the residential house San Vincenz De Paule, the Sports Complex of Marsa, San Blas, and the Sports Complex of Cottonera.”

SportMalta Schools Sports Day brings Fun and Fitness to St. Margaret College Verdala Secondary School.

Year 9 students at St. Margaret College Verdala Secondary School recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in this event, joining other schools locally and internationally in celebrating the importance of physical activity. The event was all about promoting sport, health, and fitness, while encouraging students to adopt a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

The day kicked off with a brief introduction, where students learned that many schools across Malta were simultaneously taking part in this event, making them part of the #BeActive community. The students then enthusiastically engaged in a variety of activities, including basketball, football, sprinting games, strength challenges, and recreational team-building games, all within a 90-minute action-packed event.

One of the primary goals of the day was to emphasize that sports can be both fun and inclusive. By participating in these activities, students not only had a great time but also gained a deeper understanding of how sports can help them become more competent, confident, and eager to maintain a healthy lifestyle. SportMalta Schools Sports Day was a fantastic way for students to enjoy physical activity while learning valuable lessons about the benefits of staying active.

St. Gorg Preca College Marsa Primary School celebrated the SportMalta Schools Sports Day 2023 with great enthusiasm. Young students in years 4, 5, and 6 were at the forefront of this exciting event. They dedicated an entire hour to engaging in physical activities, showcasing their sporting prowess, and having an immense amount of fun.

The event was not just about play; it was a valuable learning experience. Students had the chance to practice a variety of skills and work as a team with their classmates. This sense of togetherness and collaboration was a testament to the strength of our school community.

Under the guidance of  the Physical Education teacher, along with the support of year group teachers and Learning Support Educators,  students were able to actively participate in a wide range of sports activities.
