As part of the European Week of Sport 2026, Honey Island Rollers hosted a roller derby bout between Irkotta and PiÅželli on Sunday 27 September at the National Sports School in Pembroke. The event brought together skaters, officials and volunteers for a morning of sport and community, which also included pastizzi.
The bout showcased the speed, strategy and teamwork of roller derby, giving those present the opportunity to see the sport in action. The friendly competition allowed participants and volunteers to come together in a positive and welcoming atmosphere, with the day’s activity centred on fair play and enjoyment of the game.
A Team Effort on and Off the Track
Roller derby relies on the contribution of many people, and the bout reflected this. Skaters competed on the track, while officials and volunteers played an important part in ensuring that the bout ran smoothly. The event gave everyone involved the chance to spend time together and share their enthusiasm for the sport.
Promoting an Active and Inclusive Approach to Sport
The event encouraged an active and inclusive approach to sport and promoted roller derby as an exciting and accessible sport in Malta. By opening the bout to those interested in seeing the sport first-hand, Honey Island Rollers helped raise awareness of roller derby within the local community.
The bout also reflected the European Week of Sport’s wider aim of encouraging people of all ages to make sport and physical activity part of everyday life. Events such as this show that there are many ways to stay active, and that new and less traditional sports can also find a place within the community.
