The Minister for Education, Sports, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima inaugurated a project that started last year and finished within a record time. The project, with an investment of âŽ2.5 million, has transformed the Matthew Micallef St John stadium in Marsa into a state-of-the-art facility. The investment will provide Malta with a top-level athletics track for professional practice, and it will also boost the participation of athletes in the upcoming Small Nations Games in May.
The project is part of the national Sports Strategy, which recognizes the importance of sports infrastructure. The Minister expressed satisfaction that the investment will provide children and young people with professional training facilities and help them achieve international level results in their favorite sports.
The project was carried out by Sport Malta and includes the construction of new structures, resurfacing of the 400-meter track and the 100-meter warm-up track, new fencing, a new main stand with changing rooms, lecture rooms, photo finish room, showers and clinics, two halls for gym sessions, renovation of the pole vault, high jump, long jump, and throws area, and general refurbishment of the facility.
The CEO of Sport Malta, Mark Cutajar, said the project is part of a wider plan to invest in accessible sports facilities across the country.
