As part of the SportMalta School Sports Day, St Clare College Sliema Primary School celebrated Maltaâs rich cultural heritage through a series of traditional games that encouraged pupils to stay active while discovering the games enjoyed by previous generations.
A total of 43 pupils from two Year 2 and Year 3 classes participated in this Physical Education initiative, organised by Ms Nicole and Mr Jeremy. The activities combined physical movement with cultural learning, giving pupils the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills while experiencing the enjoyment of traditional Maltese play.

The programme featured five traditional games, each offering different physical challenges and learning opportunities. Through Il-Passju, pupils practised hopping, balance, and coordination, while Il-BoÄÄi encouraged accuracy, concentration, and strategic thinking. Il-Logħba tal-ÄĶbula introduced rope-skipping challenges that developed rhythm, agility, and endurance, while Il-Logħba taÄ-Äirku challenged pupils to guide a rolling hoop, improving movement control and spatial awareness.
The activities concluded with Il-Logħba tal-Maktur, an energetic team game in which pupils had to react quickly, demonstrate agility, and make strategic decisions while competing against their opponents. Throughout the sessions, pupils were encouraged to support one another, respect their peers, demonstrate teamwork, and fair play.

Beyond promoting physical activity, the initiative provided a valuable opportunity to preserve and celebrate Maltaâs traditional games. It demonstrated how simple activities that were once a regular part of childhood can continue to offer meaningful opportunities for movement, social interaction, and enjoyment without the need for modern sporting equipment.
