On the 11th of October, St Monica Primary School Gzira enthusiastically participated in the SportMalta School Sports Day, reaching 207 students from Grades 4, 5, and 6. Each class, divided into two groups, engaged in a range of physical activities, with 15-minute slots allocated to each station. This was the schoolâs first time joining the event, and it provided an opportunity to promote physical activity, healthy competition, and sportsmanship among students. As a school that actively participates in the IâmPOSSIBLE educational programme, the event was also designed to challenge students’ perceptions of individuals with disabilities, fostering inclusivity through Paralympic sports.
The event focused on two parasports from the IâmPOSSIBLE programmeâBoccia and athletics for the visually impaired. Sitting Boccia, a precision-based sport adapted for athletes with physical disabilities, allowed students to experience the excitement of a game where physical strength is not the key factor. Meanwhile, a continuous relay, where students were blindfolded to simulate visual impairment, highlighted the challenges faced by athletes with disabilities. Students worked together in pairs, emphasizing trust, coordination, and communication.
In addition to the physical activities, parents were engaged through emails, with links provided for follow-along workouts, including exercises suited for people with mobility difficulties. The day was a resounding success, fostering empathy, teamwork, and an inclusive spirit among the students.
